Protein Supplements and Nutrients
Why Protein Is Important Protein is the building block of the muscles in our bodies. Proteins are also responsible for the growth and repair of muscles after exercising or other physical stress. In fact, gym experts suggest that one should follow a moderate-protein/complex carbohydrate diet as protein ensures that you can repair muscles more effectively. This is particularly true for resistance training. Even the smallest damage to your muscle fiber that is made up of ‘myofibrils’ and microscopic protein filaments that work together to make the muscles contract, can be disastrous for sportsmen / athletes, especially if there is a lack of protein in the body.
Our body has its own system of repairing damage to muscle fibers. It does so by sending different nutrients and hormones, like protein and testosterone, to the damaged muscle to repair it. So, if you are into regular or resistance training, it is advisable to consume protein supplements and other proper nutrients.
Types of Protein Supplements You can consume any of the protein supplements and/or nutrients described briefly below. All these supplements have their own advantages and disadvantages.
Whey Protein – One of the most popular supplements for dieting, muscle building, and general health. Reasons why whey protein is a best seller: 1. A higher quality of protein as compared to milk, eggs or soy protein that can be digested quickly and is ideal for immunity and muscle building 2. Is low in carbohydrates and fat as well as calories 3. Can be digested much easier and faster than milk 4. Doesn’t have lactose and is good for those with lactose-intolerance 5. Available as whey concentrate with 80% protein/gram or whey isolate with 90% protein/gram
Casein (Milk) Protein – Main protein found in milk. Best sources of casein are cottage cheese, cheese etc. Here’s why it is so popular: 1. As it gets digested slowly, it is an excellent and steady source of amino acids – almost 7 hours - for your muscles 2. Is very high in natural glutamine (even higher than whey, soy or eggs) 3. One of the best proteins to prevent muscle damage due to its slow digestion rate 4. Has excellent anti-catabolic (muscle protecting) properties
Egg Protein – A protein supplement made from pure egg whites, they don’t contain any egg yellow (yolk). Why should you have egg protein, because it: 1. Is low-fat and cholesterol free 2. Is ideal for individuals who have allergies to milk/dairy products (proteins) 3. Contains all important amino acids in exact amounts as required by your body 4. Promotes optimum muscle growth 5. Maintains lean and active tissue, metabolically
Multi-Protein Blends – These are a mix of different proteins like whey, casein, soy, or egg whites. Blends are made in a way that they release amino acids over a period of time allowing for better overall consumption.
